09 Oct Does Everyone Need Dentures Eventually?
One question we hear from time to time is, “Will everyone eventually get dentures?” The short answer is no—not everyone will need dentures in their lifetime. However, it’s okay if you do!
Tooth loss is a very common problem, and there are many people who will need full or partial dentures at some point in their lives. Factors such as genetics, diet, and underlying health conditions all play a role in dental health and the likelihood of needing dentures.
If teeth are lost due to decay, gum disease, or other issues, dentures can be a good solution for restoring function and appearance.
Are Dentures Inevitable?
It is entirely possible that you may never need them! With advances in dental care, including preventive measures and treatments, more people are keeping their natural teeth longer. And although many people choose dental implants over dentures, not everyone is a good candidate for dental implants.
For some, perhaps dentures are the inevitable choice. If you have multiple missing teeth, severe tooth decay or damage, have chronic toothaches and swollen gums, or are frequently visiting the dentist for root canals and crowns, dentures could be the best option.
Will Everyone Eventually Get Dentures?
About 1 in 6 senior adults (65 and older) have lost all of their teeth. Full dentures are a great option if you are missing all of your teeth in the upper and/or lower part of your mouth. If you’re only missing a few teeth, partial dentures can fill the gaps and keep your surrounding teeth from shifting.
Full dentures can either be “conventional” or “immediate.” Conventional dentures are made after the teeth are removed and the gum tissue has had 4 to 6 weeks to heal. Temporary (immediate) dentures will be made in advance so they can be fitted on the same day the teeth are extracted. That way, you will be able to have teeth as your mouth heals.
Adjustments are typically necessary as the cheeks, lips and tongue adapt to the new appliance. Your dentist will examine the fit of your dentures and correct any issues before ordering a permanent (conventional) set.
