Debunking Myths About Dentures

Dentures are a great way to restore your smile. However, there are many misconceptions about dentures out there that may make you think twice before getting them. But don’t let a few falsehoods hold you back from getting the dental care you deserve. We’re here to debunk some of the most common myths about dentures, so you can make an informed decision about whether or not they’re right for you.

Four Common Myths About Dentures

Myth #1: Dentures Are Uncomfortable

Many people believe that dentures are too uncomfortable to wear regularly. Although some temporary discomfort is to be expected during the initial adjustment period, the dentures of today are much more comfortable overall than those of the past. Modern technology allows for full dentures and partials to be more custom-fit than ever before.

It’s normal to feel some temporary discomfort when you first get your dentures. Your mouth, lips, and cheek muscles will need time to adjust to wearing them. But if your discomfort doesn’t go away after a few weeks, it might mean they don’t fit right.

Dentures can also start hurting after you’ve had them for a long time due to wear and tear causing them to fit improperly. They might also cause pain if your bite has changed and altered their fit. Significant changes in body weight can also affect denture fit. If your dentures start to hurt for any reason, visit your dentist immediately to have your dentures adjusted or to get a new set.

While wearing dentures can be very comfortable, your mouth will still need breaks from wearing them. Soaking your dentures every night will keep them clean and let your gums rest.

Myth #2: Dentures Fall Out Easily

The mortifying thought of your dentures suddenly falling out in the middle of a conversation or a meal is enough for some people to steer clear of them. Loose dentures can be a problem if they are low quality, especially if they aren’t custom-made for your mouth.

However, high quality, custom dentures that fit properly are very secure. You can speak and eat normally while wearing them, and you don’t need to worry about them falling out.

Myth #3: Dentures Don’t Look Natural

Another common worry about dentures is that they will look fake or unattractive. Again, you may face this issue if you opt for low quality dentures made from cheap materials. However, custom dentures are shaped and colored to seamlessly mimic your natural smile. They’re also made from durable, high quality materials, so you can trust them to last for seven years or more.

Myth #4: Dentures Don’t Need to Be Cleaned

Some people believe that when they don’t have teeth, maintaining good oral hygiene habits is no longer necessary. But your gums are vulnerable to gum disease with or without teeth, and poor denture care can greatly increase your risk. Plus, dirty dentures can lead to oral thrush and other mouth infections

To keep your dentures clean and your mouth healthy, you must gently brush your dentures twice a day. Use a brush and cleaner specifically designed for use on dentures to avoid causing damage. If you have any remaining teeth, it’s essential that you brush them twice a day and floss daily to prevent additional tooth loss. And as we mentioned above, denture care also includes soaking them overnight.
