11 Aug 10 Ways to Keep Your Teeth Healthy
Small, consistent choices add up to a much healthier mouth over time. These ways to keep your teeth healthy aren’t complicated, but they do take a little intention, especially the ones people usually skip. Building even two or three of these into your week is one of the simplest tips for better dental health you’ll find, and your future self will thank you.
1. Time Your Brushing According to Your Lifestyle
If your morning includes coffee, orange juice, or anything acidic, brush before breakfast. Acidic foods and drinks soften your tooth enamel for a little while, and brushing during that window can wear it down even more. Wait about 30 minutes after snacks or meals to give your saliva a chance to neutralize those acids before you brush.
2. Save the Mouthwash for Later
Mouthwash usually has a lot less fluoride than toothpaste, so rinsing too soon can wash away the fluoride before it’s had time to work. Instead of using mouthwash after you brush, save it for a totally different part of the day, like between meals or after a coffee break.
3. Chew Xylitol Gum
Look for sugar-free gum with xylitol, a sugar substitute that helps fight cavities with regular use. Chewing gum also stimulates saliva production, which helps prevent dry mouth and plaque buildup. Keep a pack in your car or your desk drawer and chew a piece after meals or whenever you feel like your breath could be a little fresher.
4. Add Electrolytes to Your Water
Staying hydrated helps your mouth produce saliva, which is basically your built-in defense system against plaque. If plain water bores you, sugar-free electrolyte powders are a great way to mix things up. Adding a little flavor can help you drink more water throughout the day, and the electrolytes will help keep you hydrated longer.
5. Eat the Entire Snack at Once
Grazing all day keeps your mouth in a constant acid bath. It’s better to eat a snack all in the course of several minutes instead of nibbling for an hour. The quality of snacks matters, too. Apples, nuts, and cheese are always going to be better for your teeth than granola bars or chips. But no matter what you’re snacking on, eat it quickly and then drink some water.
6. Finish Your Meal with a Little Cheese
Ending a meal with a small piece of cheese is one of the easiest ways to protect your teeth. Cheese helps neutralize the pH of your saliva and prevent acid attacks after a meal. It’s also rich in calcium, one of the most important minerals for strong tooth enamel.
7. Keep a Travel Dental Kit in Your Bag
Good habits often slip with busy schedules and frequent travel. But when you keep a small kit in your bag, you’ll be ready if some salad gets stuck in your teeth or you want to freshen your breath after a long flight.
Here’s what to pack:
- A travel toothbrush and mini toothpaste
- Dental floss or floss picks
- Sugar-free gum or mints
8. Make Brushing a Shared Habit
If you’ve got kids or grandkids around, brushing together helps set an example that sticks. Kids copy what they see, and standing at the sink together for two minutes is an easy way to build good habits.
Or, try pairing brushing with another habit that you already do every day, to make it easier to remember. For example: first, you take your prescriptions, then you brush and floss, and then you plug in your phone and go to bed.
9. Use an App to Remind You
Setting a reminder on your phone is a great way to stick to good habits. And there are any number of tooth-brushing apps that will help you with reminders, habit tracking, or brushing for a full two minutes. A lot of them are meant for kids, but they work for adults, too. And if a cute app is the whimsy you need to make brushing fun again, go for it!
10. Don’t Skip Your Checkups
We tell you to come in for a cleaning every six months for a reason. Removing tartar buildup is the best way to prevent future dental health problems, and your exams are important, too. Regular visits mean we’ll be able to spot any changes right away. And if you’re over 40, an oral cancer screening is included with every exam.
