Tooth Loss Is Scary! Why You Need to Take Gum Disease Seriously

Fix gingivitis with a professional cleaning, but periodontal disease has no cure. Take gum disease seriously before your teeth fall out.

Tooth Loss Is Scary! Why You Need to Take Gum Disease Seriously

Giant skeletons and spiderwebs and jack-o-lanterns in everyone’s front yard, kids dressed up as zombies or vampires or monsters, haunted houses and spooky corn mazes and ghost tours. Scary things can be a lot of fun, especially on Halloween!

But do you know what scares dentists?

GUM DISEASE

Gum disease is a secret monster that hides in plain sight. It’s a chronic infection that starts when bacteria build up and form plaque along your gumline. And it’s the number one cause of tooth loss, which is what makes it so scary.

The early signs are easy to shrug off. If you have ever spit out a little pink in the sink while brushing your teeth, you know what we are talking about. Perhaps your gums look puffy or feel itchy. But red, swollen, tender, or bleeding gums are the classic symptoms of gum disease.

At this point, these signs usually mean gingivitis, which is the only stage you can fully reverse. A professional cleaning can stop gingivitis, but past that stage, it can’t be cured.

There is no cure for gum disease.

Once gingivitis progresses to the next stage, periodontitis, the disease can only be managed. There’s no treatment yet that can completely reverse it.

That’s why you need to take gum disease seriously, even if it seems minor. If it advances, you’ll need gum disease treatment for the rest of your life.

The Connection Between Gum Disease and Tooth Loss

Gum disease causes permanent damage to the gums, the roots of the teeth, and the bone that holds them in place.

When the infection spreads beneath the gumline, the bone tissue that anchors your teeth starts to break down. It hurts to chew, your teeth start to get loose, and eventually, they fall out.

You have a higher risk of tooth loss if you smoke or vape.

Smoking and vaping both irritate your gums and cause inflammation, so your body has a harder time fighting a gum infection. Even worse, once your gums are damaged, smoking and vaping disrupt the healing process, as well.

In fact, smokers have twice the risk of gum disease compared with non-smokers, and the more you smoke, the higher your risk of tooth loss. Even worse, smoking makes treatments for gum disease less effective.

Vaping isn’t really any better. Plenty of people switch to vaping thinking it’s the safe choice. But even though e-cigarette users have a slightly lower risk of gum disease compared to smokers, they still have a much bigger risk than non-smokers (and non-vapers). And the risk of oral cancer may be just as high.

Gum disease is often related to other health problems.

Gum disease has some unfriendly companions. If you have diabetes, you’re more likely to deal with gum disease, and both diseases make each other worse. Both type 1 and type 2 diabetes raise your risk, and chronic infections like gum disease make blood sugar levels harder to control.

Research also ties gum disease to heart and respiratory conditions because oral bacteria and chronic inflammation can travel through your bloodstream or respiratory tract.
