Preventive Dental Care Tips for Seniors

When it comes to taking care of your teeth, you may need to make a few changes as you age. Dental problems are far more common in people over sixty, so you might also need to see a dentist more often. Brushing and flossing are still the best way to keep your teeth and gums healthy, but preventive care is important as well. Refresh your knowledge of good oral health habits with these simple tips from our dentists.

At-Home Dental Care Tips for Seniors

Older adults are often more likely to suffer tooth loss because of problems like receding gums, low saliva, and poor manual dexterity. If you notice even the slightest change in your oral health, make an appointment with your dentist right away. The key to lasting oral health is getting the treatment you need in time, before serious damage can occur.

Dental care tips for everyone:

  • Brush your teeth twice daily with a soft-bristled toothbrush and a fluoride toothpaste.
  • Floss daily. If using dental floss is a challenge, use a water flosser instead.
  • Use mouthwash to eliminate bacteria.
  • Brush your tongue to keep your mouth cleaner.
  • Drink plenty of water to prevent plaque buildup and dry mouth.
  • Avoid the sugary snacks and drinks that lead to tooth decay

If you have removable dentures or a dental bridge:

  • Clean dentures and bridges and according to your dentist’s instructions.
  • Get your dentures or bridges checked regularly and replaced as needed.

How Often Should Seniors Go to the Dentist?

Although most adults only need dental checkups every six months, some can benefit from more frequent appointments. For example, if you have diabetes or take medications that cause dry mouth as a side effect, you may need to see a dentist more often.

If your dentist recommends more frequent appointments, it’s for a good reason. If you have gum disease, regular treatments will keep it from getting worse. And if you’re at risk for oral cancer, regular exams will help us monitor your health more closely for any changes.

Preventive Dental Care Is Even More Important As You Age

Dental exams, cleanings, and x-rays are a crucial part of keeping your mouth healthy. In addition to routine tasks like removing tartar buildup, these visits also give dentists a chance to monitor your oral health and evaluate any changes.

Checkups give us an opportunity to spot problems in their early stages when treatments are likely to be less invasive. They also give you an opportunity to ask us questions or bring up any age-related concerns like lessening mobility.
