What to Expect at Your Child’s First Dental Visit

Kids aren’t the only ones who get nervous about going to the dentist—sometimes parents feel anxious as well. Our dentists, hygienists, and support team will do everything they can to put you both at ease and make it a positive experience. And knowing what happens during a child’s first dental exam will make it easier for you to prepare. Here’s what to expect.

When Should a Child’s First Dental Happen?

A child’s first dental visit should be around their first birthday, or within six months of cutting their first tooth. Don’t put it off until there’s a problem—this could make your child’s first visit uncomfortable and frightening. But if you notice any concerning signs like tooth discoloration or teeth not appearing in the expected order, consult a dentist right away.

The Importance of a Child’s First Dental Visit

Along with establishing good brushing and flossing habits, establishing a relationship with a trusted dentist is also important. Children who are familiar with dental office visits from a young age may experience less dental anxiety later on.

Consistent care also means that any changes in tooth development or dental health can be addressed promptly. You probably know that even baby teeth are vulnerable to cavities. While people used to believe that baby teeth “don’t count,” keeping your child’s teeth cavity-free prevents painful decay, premature tooth loss, and other problems that could affect your child’s lifelong smile.

What to Expect at a Child’s First Dental Visit

We put a lot of care and attention into fostering a welcoming atmosphere, from using kid-sized tools to child-friendly chairside manners. Our focus is on setting a positive tone, providing clear and useful information, and establishing a relationship.

Here’s what typically happens at a first dental visit:

  • Your child’s dentist and hygienist will introduce themselves.
  • Teeth will get counted and gently cleaned by a dental hygienist.
  • Next, the dentist will perform a visual examination of the child’s teeth, gums, and bite, using child-sized tools.
  • You can expect to be asked about common meantime habits as well as behaviors like pacifier use or thumb-sucking.
  • Best practices on good brushing are shared with parents, as is guidance about choosing healthy foods.
  • There’s always a chance for you to ask questions, too, such as about the proven value of fluoride in preventing cavities
  • Our dentists want your child to feel at ease and for you to feel supported with any concerns about their dental health, now and in the future.
